Class B Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist

If you're pursuing your Class B CDL, you'll need to know how to do a pretrip inspection of your vehicle. This checklist will help you make sure you're covering all your bases and ensuring the safest of yourself and your passengers.

Class B Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist

Engine compartment

  • Check the oil level and add oil if necessary.
  • Check the coolant level and add coolant if necessary.
  • Check all fluid levels (transmission, power steering, brakes, etc.) and add fluid if necessary.
  • Check for any leaks under the hood.
  • Listen for any unusual noises coming from the engine compartment.

Front of truck

Before you even get in the truck, you should do a quick walkaround to check the condition of the vehicle.

  • Spare tire: Check for tread depth and wear.
  • Lights: Check all the lights, including headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Replace any burntout bulbs.
  • Mirrors: Make sure all the mirrors are clean and free of cracks. Adjust them so you have a good view of the road behind you.
  • Fuel level: Check the fuel gauge to see how much fuel is in the tank. If it’s low, fill it up before you hit the road.

Front suspension

  • Check the airbags. If they are low, add air until they are at the proper level.
  • Inspect the shocks and struts for leaks.
  • Look for cracks or other damage in the suspension components.
  • Check the wheel bearings for wear or damage.

Side of truck

  • Lights and reflectors: All lights should be working, and reflectors should be clean and free of damage.
  • Fuel level: Make sure you have enough fuel to get where you’re going!
  • Leaks: Check for any leaks that could potentially cause problems down the road.

Brake system checklist

One of the most important aspects of your pretrip inspection is checking the condition of your truck’s brake system.

  • Brake pedals: Check that the brake pedals are not loose and that they return to the rest position when released.
  • Brake lines: and hoses Check for any leaks, damage or corrosion.
  • Brake chambers: Check for any leaks, damage or corrosion.
  • Brake shoes and pads Check for wear and tear.
  • Brake drums and discs Check for wear and tear.

Wheel system

  • Tire condition: Check for any signs of wear or damage, such as cracks, bulges, or cuts in the sidewalls. Also make sure that the tread depth is adequate.
  • Tire pressure: All tires should be inflated to the correct pressure as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Wheel alignment: Look for any signs that the wheels are not aligned properly, such as uneven wear on the tires.
  • Wheel balance: Check that the wheels are balanced correctly to avoid vibration while driving.
  • Brake drums and rotors: Inspect the brake drums and rotors for any signs of damage or wear.

Rear Suspension

  • Check that the springs are not damaged and that the hangers are not loose.
  • Check the shocks for leaks and damage.
  • Check the airbags for leaks and damage.
  • Check the brakes for wear and tear.
  • Check the tire tread depth and inflation levels.

Lights and reflectors

  • Headlights: Check both low and high beams to make sure they are working properly. If one is not working, replace the bulb.
  • Tail lights: Make sure all of your tail lights are working. Again, if one is not working, replace the bulb.
  • Turn signals: Check both front and back turn signals to ensure they are functioning properly. If not, replace the bulbs.
  • Side marker lights: These should also be checked to ensure they are working properly. Replacing any burnt out bulbs is a must.
  • Hazard lights: Test your hazard lights to make sure they are working as well. You never know when you might need to use them!

Passenger items

  • Seat belts: All seat belts should be in good condition and functioning properly.
  • Doors: All doors should be closed and locked.
  • Windows: All windows should be closed and locked.
  • Mirrors: All mirrors should be clean and free of any obstructions.
  • Horn: The horn should be tested to make sure it is working properly.
  • Lights: All lights (headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals) should be working properly.

School bus items

As a school bus driver, you are responsible for the safety of your passengers. Here is a checklist of items to look for:

  • Wheels and tires: Check the condition of the tires and make sure they are properly inflated. Look for any damage to the wheels.
  • Brakes: Check the brake pads and shoes for wear. Make sure the brake fluid level is adequate.
  • Lights and reflectors: Check all the lights and reflectors to make sure they are working properly.
  • Mirrors: Check all the mirrors to make sure they are clean and adjusted properly.
  • Windshield and windows: Check the windshield for cracks or chips. Make sure all the windows are clean and free of obstructions.

Incab inspection

Before you even start your engine, it’s important to do a thorough check inside the vehicle’s cabin.

  • Check all of your fluids (coolant, transmission, brake) and top them off if necessary.
  • Do a visual check of your entire vehicle, looking for any signs of damage or leaks.
  • Test all of your lights (headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals) to make sure they are working properly.
  • Make sure your mirrors are clean and adjusted properly.
  • Buckle up. Always wear your seatbelt.

  • Inspect the wheels and drums for any cracks or damage.
  • Inspect the brake shoes and pads for wear. These need to be replaced if they are worn down.
  • Inspect the brake linings for wear. These need to be replaced if they are worn down.
